The garden that's saving a Malawi village & why it needs your help...Supplied with seed and tools by Englishwoman,
Sonia Waters, it is providing enough food that the 56 schoolchildren, many orphaned by AIDS, no longer have to go to school
without breakfast. Or lunch.
After visiting the village of Likoma on holiday in 2005 Sonia, wife of an eminent lawyer, set up a non profit making organisation
to help the villagers help themselves. Sonia bought the land and supplied the seed to start the garden which feeds the village
and makes enough surplus to sell. Kale and lettuce do particularly well. Now goats - in a specially built pen so they can't
ravage the countryside - have been added to the kitchen garden area. This has transformed life for the villagers who used
to depend on subsistence fishing or, for just 40 islanders, jobs at the one hotel. There are no shops.
But there's a problem. The women have to get up at 4 am to bring water from the lake to the garden. They bring the water
on pots carried on their heads. They need a water pump. Any money you can give via the website above will go straight to
